Artist's Biography

Mark K. Oeser was born in New York City. He moved to Colorado in 1945, and in 1952 enlisted in the U.S. Navy. The next 23 years were spent as a naval propulsion engineer. While on assignment in Morocco, from 1963 to 1966 he reestablished his creative process and interest in contemporary as well as primitive sculpture and relief. It was during this time that he developed a close and personal relationship with several local artisans from the nearby villages and towns. With the approval of the U.S. Navy and as time permitted, he began to produce sculpture and relief from stone, steel, and glass. He also worked in native woods for decorative and traditional works.

In 1967, Oeser was reassigned to sea duty in Norfolk, Virginia. His work at this time was limited to sketches, drawings and small design concepts from mixed media. In 1975 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He returned to Colorado and enrolled in Front Range Community College graduating in 1976 with an Associates Degree in Art. In 1976, Oeser embarked on a full time commitment to contemporary experimental art and theory, returning to sculpture and relief as his form of expression. In 1979 he established a small studio and gallery space. He named it Eclectic Art Contemporary Art experiments. And became an active member of the Alternative Arts Alliance, a Denver based art origination.

In 1979 and 1980 his traditional and decorative works were accepted for a group exhibit at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, Arvada, Colorado. From 1982 to 1985 he was associated with Artistic Moods Inc., a traveling group of artists from Colorado and the Midwest. It was during this time that he was awarded several awards for style, composition, and creativity. From 1981 to 1984 he taught metal sculpture at EcLecTic Art.

His traditional and decorative works are in private collections throughout the United States including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Oeser's recent works from 1985 to present have been on exhibit in all the alternative galleries in Denver, Colorado.
